Critical Incident Management — Post 911
Presenter: Elizabeth Dawson - Evidence Technician (Chicago Police Department)
This workshop will provide you with a systematic approach in responding to and properly identifying critical incident infrastructure failures. This class will supply you with the proper tools to effectively respond to various types of critical incidents. The training primarily focuses on disaster preparedness and the knowledge to properly evaluate potential disaster or critical incidents before they occur.
LGBT Cultural Diversity Training — Train the Trainer
Presenter: Sergeant Don Mueller (Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department)
Sgt. Mueller will fully equip it’s attendees to return to their own agencies and conduct an introductory course in gay and lesbian awareness. This class that is currently taught at the LA County Sheriff’s Department and will be presented with suggested class exercises and videos. Each attendee will leave with a complete course outline, handouts and copies of videos presented. The primary goal is to provide you with all the tools to enable you to teach this class when you return to your law enforcement, criminal justice or emergency responder agency.
Chicago Police Department—Surveillance Technology
Presenter: Commander Jon Lewin (Chicago Police Department)
See how the Chicago Police Department uses technology tools to fight crime and improve police community information-sharing. Chicago’s award-winning Citizen and Law Enforcement Analysis and Reporting (CLEAR) system, the largest transaction police database in the United States, and other cutting-edge law enforcement technology (Automated License Plate Readers, mobile computers) and the Police Observation Device (POD) crime surveillance network will be demonstrated. Innovative new initiatives such as a Predictive Policing Project funded by the National Institute of Justice, will also be presented.
Effects of the TASER

The use of Tasers by law enforcement, corrections security, authorities have become a much talked about debate. This curriculum is designed to explore the current policies and training controversies concerning the use of Tasers and the effects it has in the use of force procedures as well as how it compares with other use of force tactics. After this class, you will have a better understanding of the effects that a Taser has on the human body, legal issues and guidance regarding the appropriate use and the use of force model.
Computer Forensics—Cyber security
Presenter: Renee Contreras—Police officer (Chicago Police Department)
Computers/digital communication has grown to be society’s way of life. It’s used for dating, money transactions and networking which leaves an open field for criminals to prey upon. As a result, there is a great demand for computer forensics knowledge in the law enforcement world. A lesson in preserving, analyzing and identifying computer evidence and how it applies in your investigative field will be applied. The workshop will also focus on ways to protect yourself when using computers/digital technology in your own personal life.
Diversity Within Law Enforcement Agencies
Presenter : Diane Doyle (London Police Department)
Diane Doyle who is an administrator of diversity and women issues for the London Police Department will exhibit the importance of cross cultural understanding and how it directly affects law enforcement. She will examine stereotypes, cultural stigmas and how her program has an effective way of ensuring proper diversity understanding of women and all minority groups.
Terrorism Awareness
Presenter: Tactical Officer Matt Cannon (Chicago Police Department)
Officer Matt Cannon is a Terrorism Awareness Liaison for CPD. He will provide a terrorism overview that will arm you with the techniques and tools to detect pre-incident terrorist indicators and law enforcement roles on various types of terrorist activities and how to maintain officers safety when encountered.
School Incidents and Violence: Partnerships for Safe Schools - Educational Services, Psychology, Counseling

In view of the increase of school violence, this session addresses common issues and crisis management facing schools, law enforcement personnel, and other emergency responders. Bullying, school fights, truancy and drug use have all been characteristic of school life for many years, but their important links with offending and victimization, and their impact on health and social development, are now much more widely acknowledged. There is also much more willingness to label school behaviors as violent, and to see the police, rather than the school, as the appropriate response. Extreme incidents of violence such as the Columbine tragedy in the United States or the school shooting in Erfurt, Germany, have also helped to increase concerns about the need to develop effective prevention programs in schools.
Same Sex Pension & The Effects of Freeheld
Presenters: Pension & Same sex Partnership Specialists—film adversaries pending
Freeheld, the Oscar winning short documentary film is about a New Jersey Lieutenant who learns she is terminally ill and fights for her pension to be left to her domestic partner. A panel discussion will follow to discus what effects the film has had on same sex pension, allowing for a number of same sex couples questions to be answered and advice on what you can do.
Crisis Intervention Training
Presenter: Joe Beosi CIT (peer support) Police officer (Chicago Police Department)
This workshop focuses on various types of mental illnesses, substance abuse, suicide prevention and de-escalation techniques. The seminar exhibits how necessary this training is for any safety officer’s survival. You will be shown real life examples and receive hands on training in order to develop a more effective, sensitive and safer approach when dealing with crisis intervention incidents involving crisis intervention.
Coping with the veteran responders silent enemy
Presenter: Sgt. Andre Zayas (Chicago Police Department)
Sgt. Zayas is a veteran war soldier, a Sergeant in the CPD, Board member of the FOP Military Committee, crisis and military intervention officer. He will give you a comprehensive insight into the silent tormentor of law enforcement, military, correction officers, and emergency responders. You or someone you know may be having coping issues with daily life. If so, you are not alone, the front line is a common place for daily stressors which can have a long lasting effect. If you are GLBT the effects can be even more difficult if your in the closet. The primary incentive of this seminar is to identify symptoms, treatment and self help. Thus, transitioning from a victim to a survivor.
Substance Abuse Within the Work Force

Hear from police officers that have personally struggled with alcohol and drug abuse. They will discuss on duty and off duty repercussions and the affects it had on their lives, their careers and society.
Executive panel “Managing Diversity”
Presenter: CPD exempt, suburban exempt, county corrections & political management
Moderator: pending
Open discussion regarding departmental policies concerning LGBT issues. A similar panel was presented at the International Criminal Justice Diversity Symposium in Palm Springs and received rave reviews. As a result, we used the same synopsis and will also be presenting an executive panel discussing LGBT inclusion and policies. While numerous departments have faced multi-million dollar lawsuits surrounding sexual orientation issues, others have been able to create positive, inclusive working environments for their lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender department members. An executive panel will discuss different policies, issues and methods that have been utilized to reach these goals. The issues of recruiting, training, discipline and promotions will be addressed. There will be no other classes present during this presentation.
LGBT Youth: Minority Interaction
Presenter: Alicia Ozier—Executive Director (Task Force Prevention & Community Services)
There have been more demands placed on local authorities by communities who are extremely concerned about rising crime rates by LGBT youth, even by the GLBT business community. Yet, the authorities (corrections, police, emergency responders) are scrutinized when they encounter troubled or gay teens. Juvenile crime is on the rise yet how does the officer have a personal impact on youth and transform the negative police image most troubled gay teens have? Alicia Ozier who works closely with the troubled youth, local authorities and tends to daily complaints will discuss effective police interactions with youth and provide techniques and practical strategies in youth relations. Videos, live interactions and actual case examples will be explored.
Transgender issues within law enforcement agencies
Presenter: Panel of transgender & transsexual persons from law enforcement & the community
This panel will expand your knowledge, understanding and provide correction officers and law enforcement, with a more detailed awareness of transgender and transsexual issues. Topics include transitioning, employee relations, legal issues, trans-profiling, homelessness, incarceration and perceptions. Videos and personal interaction will be utilized.
Veteran benefits

Law Enforcement Departments, Criminal Justice Agencies and emergency response agencies have many employees that are military veterans, retirees or on active duty. If you or someone you know is a interested in learning about GI bills and benefits. Emily will provide liaison services during this presentation.
